Hampton University Awarded Grant from Wolf Aviation Fund in Support of the Project

The Society of Aviation and Flight Educators (SAFE) has begun development of a new Aviation-Mentoring Program. Working together with SAFE, Hampton University Department of Aviation has received a grant from the Wolf Aviation Fund to help develop the project. According to Hampton University Associate Professor, Dr. Donna Wilt, “Access to a comprehensive mentoring program can improve the ability of our corps of aviation educators to teach well, and through this, improve aviation safety. We are grateful for the support provided by the Wolf Aviation Fund to get this started.”

The first step in the process is to reach out to aviation educators and determine what support educators need and want regarding mentoring. Consequently, SAFE and Hampton University have generated a survey for all aviation educators to assess the needs and desires of potential mentors and mentees. Aviation educators from all disciplines are invited to participate in the survey, either online at https://www.safepilots.org/mentoring-survey/, or by stopping by SAFE’s Booth (E-6) during Sun-n-Fun and filling out a printed survey.

SAFE Director Arlynn McMahon—winner of the 2010 National Air Transportation Association (NATA) Excellence in Flight Training Award—said, “this survey will gather a great deal more information about the industry needs regarding mentoring than has ever been gathered before.” Survey results will steer the development of a program that ultimately could have a positive influence on all those involved in providing aviation education.

Others interested in providing financial or other support for the mentoring program should contact SAFE.
